What Is Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation surgery is a procedure used to reconstruct or redefine the chin area between the lower lip and the bottom of the face. When used in conjunction with other facial procedures, such as facelifts, rhinoplasty, brow lifts or eyelid surgery, chin augmentation can help align your facial features and give you the effect you’ve always wanted.
The most common type of chin augmentation procedure is chin implant surgery, which involves inserting chin implants over the existing chin to improve chin projection. This can help fix a weak chin or bring the chin in line with the rest of the face following a facelift. Implant types include flexible solid silicone implants and porous polythethylene implants, both of which have their own advantages.
An alternative to implant-based augmentation is sliding genioplasty where the jawbone is cut and moved forwards to advance the chin. One of the risks of this surgery is damage to the nerves that provide sensation to the lower lip on both sides, or infection of the metalwork used to hold it in place.
There are also non-surgical chin augmentation options, which use dermal fillers or autologous fat injections to reshape the chin and make it appear fuller. This option is less invasive but also may not be permanent. As such the results may fade over time.
